The obelisk built in 1954 in Memphis, Tennessee, was to memorialize the heroic acts of one Tom Lee who in 1925 saved the lives of 32 people, pulling them from the Mississippi River though he couldn’t even swim himself.

The granite obelisk was installed in the Riverfront Park two years after his death from cancer. In 2017 the memorial was knocked down by a storm. (I thought it was repaired, but recent siting of it show only the base there.) The park is named Tom Lee Park in his honor and that is where the Memphis In May celebration is traditionally held each year in May. There is also another newer Tom Lee Monument sculpture to the South of this obelisk.

Artist and Memphian Karen Francis painted the scene in this art print, never before publicly released, called "Tom Lee Monument" in the nineteen nineties. The original oil on canvas, possibly named Tom Lee Park, was gifted away to a courageous, hard working, patient person....
